WSF10 - The 2010 edition
The engagement of Internet users with online service providers, though considerable, doesn't seem proportional to the massively increased service offer. The matter between users and providers is very elaborate indeed. Intuition might say that some form of user authentication is useful, perhaps involving cunning biometric techniques. But the matter is complicated well beyond sheer technology. It involves issues of privacy perception and trust formation that appear to call for a combined socio-technical approach to service negotiation and attainment. Much more than ticking "yes, I fully accept your privacy policy" seems to be underpinning the users' legitimate stances. Is differential privacy understood enough to be deployable? Or should our focus simply turn to providers' trustworthyness instead?
