CIS Research Group is part of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Catania, Italy. Its research is focused in the area of Optimization in general through the use of Metaheuristics and Machine Learning methodologies.
The CIS main research applications are related to network science, combinatorial optimization, computational biology and collective behavior.

MESS 2024
Metaheuristics Summer School is aimed at qualified and strongly motivated MSc and PhD students; post-docs; young researchers, and both academic and industrial professionals to provide an overview on the several metaheuristics techniques, and an in-depth analysis of the state-of-the-art. The main theme of this edition is “Learning and Optimization from Big Data”.

Artifical Immune Systems special session @ CEC 2021
The Artificial Immune System, also known as Immune Computation, is a relatively new branch in the computational intelligence community, which is inspired by the structure, functions, models and information processing mechanism of biological immune system.
This special session, part of CEC 2021, aims to focus on the state-of-the-art research on immune-inspired algorithms and the new conceptual models for understanding the dynamics that underlie the immune system.

IEEE Symposium on Immune Computation @ IEEE SSCI 2021
The IEEE Symposium on Immune Computation is a part of the IEEE Symposium Series of Computational Intelligence (IEEE SSCI 2021). The aims of this symposium are: presenting the state-of-the-art on immune computation; providing a forum to disseminate the recent advances and views on future perspectives in the field; and offering new conceptual models for understanding the dynamics that underlie the immune system.

Solving optimization problems is very often hard and difficult, and in many cases current optimization methods may be impractical to apply due to the large size of the search space and time constraints. In light of this, approximate algorithms, and among these the Metaheuristics, are reliable tools able to offer robust solutions in reasonable times, and often they represent the unique alternative in solving complex optimization problems thanks to their ability in efficiently exploring large search spaces by reducing their effective sizes.
